When you are experiencing a mental health crisis, you have no idea what to do. You feel completely alone in the world and you haven’t got a clue to do to make everything better. This sounds really cliche, and I know you have heard this countless times before, but it does get better. You just have to ride it out. Easier said than done, I know, but here is a little action plan that I use when I’m in crisis. I do hope that it is of some use to somebody out there.
First of all, tell someone. It’s hard to make that first step, but by telling someone, they can ensue that you keep yourself safe.
Remove anything that you can use to hurt yourself, and keep it out of the way of temptation.
Make yourself a little list (preferably do this when you are feeling okay, and keep it handy for when you need it). On this list, write down distractions to work through. Yes, I know, distractions. That thing that every crisis team and helpline seem to be obsessed with, and is the only advice they can seem to offer, but its unfortunately pretty much the only thing you can really do. Make a list of things that you love to do; go for a walk, draw a picture, paint your nails. Make a vow with yourself that you wont hurt yourself in any way until you have worked through the entire list, but make sure that telling someone, getting help and calling a crisis team or helpline is on that list somewhere and that you don’t skip this step. If you still feel this way at the end of your list, get immediate help. Go to A and E (and make sure they actually take you seriously) or even call 999-this is not a silly option and is something you should definately do if you can’t keep yourself safe.
Make a distractions jar. Fill it with little slips of paper and write down distractions on it (I know, those stupid distractions again). When you need to, pull a bit of paper out of the jar and do whatever it says. Keep doing this till you start to feel a little bit better, and if this isn’t working, call a helpline.
